Why We Exist:
We exist to shape and mold the next generation. Outside of a child's parents, teachers and educators spend more time with a child from ages 5-18 than anyone else. We spend approximately 1,250 hours with each student in just one chool year. In the 3 years a student spends at Sagewood Middle School, that's 3,750 hours!!
Given our time with our students, how do we want to impact them in the time we have?
- Help Students develop confidence in who they are
- Encourage them to embrace mistakes and learn from them
- Lead by example, show that we're all human and admit when we're wrong
- Practice the skills and habits they'll need for high school and beyond
- Teach students how to think critically and think for themselves
- How to work with others and to build collaborative relationships
- Empower them to persevere through challenges and overcome obstacles
- Model and teach respect, and show students how to take responsibility
But first, all students come in the door asking us 3 questions before they're willing to learn anything from us. Those questions are:
- Do you like me?
- Will you help me?
- Can I trust you?
We answer these questions for students the first week of school as we get to know them and build those relationships, and we answer these questions every single day as we work with them throughout the year. Students need to feel that we genuinely like them by how we interact with them, know their names, pronounce their names correctly and are interested in their lives. When students ask for help, they should feel patience, grace and a commitment from us to help them learn, even when we've already given them the instructions. Finally, students will trust us to maintain confidentiality and do what we say and always follow through.
